Lead Paint Sample Collection Instructions
- On the sample area surface, draw an outline of the sampling area with a permanent marker of at least 1 square inch in area.
- Spray the sample area lightly with water.
- Remove 1 square inch of paint with a paint chipper, scraper, or knife. Try sampling the paint itself and not the material underneath.
- Place the paint in a Ziploc bag. If you collected paint from multiple areas, use a separate bag for each area and label the bag accordingly.
Lead Soil Sample Collection Instructions
- Put on clean, disposable gloves.
- Dig a small test hole with a depth of 0.5 inch adjacent to the sample area. Use this test hole as a visual aid during soil collection to help limit collection to a depth of 0.5 inch.
- Scoop the soil in the sample area with a clean spoon. Place the scooped soil in a Ziploc bag.
- Scoop until you have a circular hole of approximately 2 inches in diameter and 0.5 inch in depth.
- Collect soil from two more locations within a 1 foot diameter circle around the first sample location, using the same procedure described above. Put the soil in the same Ziploc bag you used before. Press out all the air from the Ziploc bag when you have finished.
- Dispose of the gloves. If you used a disposable spoon, dispose of that as well; otherwise, thoroughly clean the spoon.
Lead Wipes Sample Collection Instructions
- Mark 1 square foot of sample area with a ruler and tape. If unable to measure a square foot (e.g. if area is too small), measure the exact dimensions of the sample area and include these measurements when you submit the samples. The sample area must be larger than 0.1 square feet and smaller than 2 square feet. If you do not provide a measurement, we will assume that the sample area was 1 square foot when we analyze the samples.
- Put on clean, disposable gloves. Do not touch anything except for the wipe after you have put the gloves on.
- Using ghost wipe (Ghost Wipes may be mailed to customer if they have paid for testing online) using a side-to-side motion until you have wiped the entire area.
- Fold the wipe in half, keeping the dirty side in, and repeat the wiping procedure, this time using an up-and-down motion until you have wiped the entire area.
- Fold and wipe one more time, making sure to get the edges and corners.
- Fold the wipe again with the sample side in and place it inside of a Ziploc bag. If you have multiple sample areas, use one wipe per sample area and place each wipe in its own bag. Label the bags so you can identify where each sample came from.
- Dispose of the gloves in a trash bag and wash your hands.
